The Extraction of Copper - Chemistry LibreTexts

The copper(II) ions in the chalcopyrite are reduced to copper(I) sulfide (which is reduced further to copper metal in the final stage). The iron in the chalcopyrite ends up converted into an iron(II) silicate slag which is removed.

BBC - GCSE Bitesize: Extraction and purification of copper

Copper can be extracted from its ore by heating it with carbon. Impure copper is purified by electrolysis in which the anode is impure copper, the cathode is pure copper, and the electrolyte is copper sulphate solution. An alloy is a mixture of two elements, one of which is a metal.

Extracting metals from rocks- Learn Chemistry

The copper carbonate is first heated to produce copper(II) oxide, which is then reduced to the metal using carbon as a reducing agent. Lesson organisation If possible, show the class a genuine sample of malachite ore and artefacts, such as paperweights or polished ‘eggs’ made from malachite, noting the green colour characteristic of many copper compounds.

Copper Mining and Extraction Sulfide Ores

Copper is an unreactive metal, it reacts only slowly with the atmosphere. This means that huge lumps of copper metal are found buried in the ground as nuggets. This is called native copper. The largest nugget of native copper ever found came from Minnesota, USA and weighed over 400 tonnes. Native copper isn't mined because there is so little of it.
